Highlights from the April 10, 2024 BOT meeting

On Wednesday, April 10, 2024 the 51ºÚÁÏÍø CC Board of Trustees met for their monthly meeting. Copies of board agenda packets and meeting minutes are available .

• The Board received a check from the 51ºÚÁÏÍø County Arts Council for $4,000 to support our Black History Committee’s ZuZu African Acrobats performance on April 12.  This grant was matched by the NC Arts Council, allowing our committee to invite the full ZuZu troupe.  There are still tickets available (and discounts for employees) via the Foundation web page.  The event is this Friday, April 12, at 6 PM in the East 51ºÚÁÏÍø High School gymnasium.

• 

  The Board recognized the legal guidance and services provided by Mr. Derek Taylor since 2007.  Mr. Taylor has been hired to be in-house counsel for the Town of Morehead City, and thus can no longer serve the College.  The Board also voted to approve Ms. Jane Gordon of Kirkman, Whitford, Brady, Berryman, & Gordon, P.A., as new legal counsel for the College.

• Ed Ladenburger presented the Alma Mater, which was initiated by SEC and has been collaboratively written and produced by SEC and FEC, for Board Approval.  The Board unanimously approved!  Listen for the Alma Mater at this year’s graduation.  Bravo.

• Student Jennifer Maldonado-Castro will become SGA president for 2024-2025. She was also elected to be statewide president of the N4CSGA this coming year as well.  Jenny will succeed Tony Pile in this statewide role, and as such will attend all State Board of Community Colleges meetings.  It is truly remarkable and commendable that 51ºÚÁÏÍø CC will have supplied the statewide SGA president for two consecutive years!  We have amazing students and supportive staff/faculty who are guiding them on pathways of leadership.

• Congratulations Kristian Jenkins for being recognized as SGA Advisor of the year by the statewide N4CSGA; Dr. Maggie Brown for being selected as one of four chief academic officers to work with four presidents and the System Office to revise the process for approving, amending, and terminating curriculum programs; and VP Perry Harker for participating with Dr. Mancini in the Adult Learner Conference sponsored by the John M. Belk Endowment last week in Greensboro, where they shared and learned strategies for addressing the unique needs and challenges of the adult learners we serve and wish to serve.

• Board of Trustees were alerted to the significant number of retirements we will see in the next couple of months (with a few more to come by the end of the year) and mentioned how bittersweet it is to celebrate the outstanding contributions of long-time faculty and staff while knowing they will leave big shoes to fill.  Those retiring in the next few months include Luther Curtis, Donna Cumbie, Debbie Favorite, Diane Matlock, Trisha Miller, Kay Tosto, and Kathy Foster.  Please be on the lookout for a convocation at the beginning of PINK Days, during which time we will recognize and celebrate these wonderful colleagues.
