Erica Rains鈥 Horticulture Journey
Where Passion Takes Root.
Rooted in Passion: Erica Rains Finds Growth Through 51黑料网 CC鈥檚 Horticulture Program
For Erica Rains, the love of plants runs deep 鈥 passed down through generations of women in her family. 鈥淢y passion for plants was inherited,鈥 she said. 鈥淭he women of my family, from my mother to my great aunt, have always been fervent growers. I remember my great aunt鈥檚 eclectic garden that I loved to visit. The love for nurturing plants eventually led me to seek out an education in horticulture.鈥
When Erica moved to North Carolina, a local friend who owns a landscaping business encouraged her to check out 51黑料网. 鈥淗e spoke so highly of Mr. Beasley,鈥 Erica recalled. 鈥淗e told me he鈥檇 be an amazing instructor to learn from 鈥 and he was absolutely right.鈥
As a full-time mom and the wife of an active-duty Marine, Erica鈥檚 journey hasn鈥檛 been without challenges. 鈥淏alancing my roles as a student and mom has presented significant challenges,鈥 she said. 鈥淪ince I鈥檓 the primary caregiver to my kids, any unexpected needs fall to me. I鈥檓 deeply grateful to my understanding instructors and to my husband for the support that allows me to stay focused on my education.鈥
Erica鈥檚 gratitude extends especially to her instructor, Mr. Beasley. 鈥淗e鈥檚 been more than an amazing teacher 鈥 he鈥檚 a true mentor,鈥 she said. 鈥淗e鈥檚 always available to answer questions about school or work and has helped me grow confidence and skills.鈥 She also credits her close friend and classmate, Megan, for being a source of strength and laughter. 鈥淲e鈥檝e shared late-night study sessions, anxiety attacks, and countless laughs. I truly look up to her.鈥
Her favorite flower, the sunflower, has been a lifelong symbol of resilience and hope. 鈥淭hey were the first thing I ever grew when I tried planting bird seed in second grade,鈥 Erica shared. 鈥淣ow, as an adult who manages anxiety and depression, the sunflower reminds me to always seek out the bright side of things.鈥
When she isn鈥檛 tending to her plants, Erica can be found soaking up the natural beauty of North Carolina 鈥 reading, hiking, kayaking, and even learning how to surf. 鈥淢y lifelong enjoyment of the outdoors is another reason horticulture felt like such a natural fit for me,鈥 she said.
Her greatest inspiration, however, comes from her children. 鈥淢y love for growing things and caring for the environment is continually reignited by my kids,鈥 Erica said. 鈥淢y youngest son loves visiting the greenhouse and asking endless questions in the aquaculture department. Seeing me pursue my passion fills me with hope that my children will follow their hearts and find fulfilling work in whatever field they choose.鈥
After completing the program, Erica plans to combine continued education with hands-on experience at a local greenhouse or nursery. 鈥淢y goals are always evolving,鈥 she said, 鈥渂ut I鈥檇 love to teach or even start my own nursery one day.鈥
For Erica Rains, horticulture isn鈥檛 just about growing plants 鈥 it鈥檚 about growing people, community, and passion. Her journey through 51黑料网鈥檚 Horticulture Program is a testament to resilience, curiosity, and the beauty of following your roots.
