How Scotty Wasson Found Creative Growth at 51黑料网 CC

Scotty Wasson鈥檚 journey through 51黑料网 CC鈥檚 Photography Program shows how learning to see differently can open the door to new creative possibilities

When you meet Scotty Wasson, it doesn鈥檛 take long to notice his deep connection to the coast. He talks about the water, the light, and the quiet beauty of Eastern North Carolina with the ease of someone who has spent years immersed in it. As a charter fishing captain, Scotty鈥檚 days were already shaped by the natural scenery of 51黑料网 County. But when he enrolled in the Photography Program at 51黑料网, he discovered a new way to capture the world that had always inspired him.

鈥淚 originally joined to improve my outdoor photography for my charter fishing business,鈥 Scotty shared. 鈥淏ut by the end, my focus completely expanded. I now shoot everything from portraits to landscapes, even family sessions and events I never imagined I鈥檇 do.鈥

What began as a practical goal quickly became something much more personal.

From Skill-Building to Artistic Discovery

One of Scotty鈥檚 most meaningful experiences in the program was an Emulation of Clyde Butcher assignment. Already a photographer he admired, Clyde Butcher became a source of deeper inspiration once Scotty studied his work more closely.

鈥淗e was already someone I followed, but diving into his life and work opened up a whole new perspective,鈥 Scotty said. 鈥淭he more I studied him, the more inspired I became.鈥

Through assignments like this, Scotty discovered that photography isn鈥檛 just about taking pictures 鈥 it鈥檚 about learning how to see. He began to notice emotion, light, and stories in moments most people pass by without a second glance.

Support That Made the Difference

Scotty credits much of his growth to the encouragement and guidance he received from his instructors and classmates.

鈥淩yan Adrick really pushed me to try new techniques and step outside my comfort zone,鈥 he said. 鈥淓ach of my classmates had their own unique style, and I learned from all of them. Everyone brought something different to the table, and that helped me grow.鈥

Another turning point came when Scotty learned to master lighting 鈥 a skill he never expected to enjoy.

鈥淚 was never a portrait photographer,鈥 he admitted. 鈥淏ut once I understood lighting, everything changed.鈥

That confidence led him to take on portraits, events, and even military homecomings 鈥 expanding his work far beyond what he initially imagined.

Recognition, Confidence, and New Possibilities

Scotty鈥檚 growth didn鈥檛 go unnoticed. His work earned first place in the Landscape Division and second place in Portrait at the Pamlico Photography Show, a milestone that reflected just how far his skills had come.

Balancing school, work, and life wasn鈥檛 always easy, but Scotty approached each assignment with intention.

鈥淚t would鈥檝e been easy to just snap a few photos,鈥 he said. 鈥淏ut really diving into each project made me a better photographer.鈥

He credits the continued support of instructors Ryan Adrick and Karen Bochnovic with helping him stay motivated.

鈥淗onestly, I don鈥檛 think I would鈥檝e completed the full diploma without them,鈥 Scotty shared. 鈥淭heir encouragement made all the difference.鈥

Capturing Home with New Eyes

Today, Scotty continues to photograph the places that first inspired him 鈥 the fiery sunsets over the Neuse River, the mix of wildlife and yachts near Radio Island, and the historic beauty of Fort Macon, one of his favorite locations for family portraits. With tools like Lightroom and Photoshop, he now brings depth and emotion to every image.

鈥淏efore this program, my sunsets looked flat and lifeless,鈥 he said. 鈥淣ow I can shoot in RAW and bring out the color and emotion I saw in that moment.鈥

For Scotty, the Photography Program at 51黑料网 CC did more than teach technical skills 鈥 it gave him confidence and creative direction.

鈥淭his program helped me explore every aspect of photography and hit the ground running,鈥 he said. 鈥51黑料网 CC helped me take my passion and turn it into something real.鈥

Advice for Future Students

When asked what advice he鈥檇 give to new photography students, Scotty doesn鈥檛 hesitate:

鈥淧ush yourself, no matter what the assignment is. You never know what you might discover you鈥檙e good at. The more you learn, the more opportunities you鈥檒l have later.鈥

Scotty Wasson鈥檚 journey reflects the heart of the Photography Program at 51黑料网 鈥 discovering your potential, building your skills, and finding your creative voice. From fishing boats to photo exhibits, Scotty has learned that with curiosity, commitment, and the right support, every frame holds the potential for something extraordinary.
