Guiding Students Toward Possibility, One Transfer at a Time
A closer look at the mentor behind a program that鈥檚 opening doors to UNC鈥揅hapel Hill
In every corner of campus, there are people whose quiet dedication changes the trajectory of students鈥 lives. For 51黑料网, one of those people is Clay Bochnovic, Academic Advisor and the proud advisor of the Carolina Student Transfer Excellence Program (C-STEP)鈥攁 partnership that has shaped what鈥檚 possible for so many of our students.
Clay鈥檚 favorite moments on campus happen during real conversations鈥攚hen a student who once doubted their ability suddenly realizes, 鈥淚 can do this.鈥 These breakthroughs, especially in subjects like math, are the moments that remind him why he does this work.
The Transformative Power of C-STEP
As the advisor for C-STEP, Clay has a front-row seat to the life-changing opportunities the program provides. Designed for students who dream of becoming Tar Heels, C-STEP creates a direct and supportive pathway to UNC鈥揅hapel Hill. The program includes guaranteed admission to UNC鈥檚 College of Arts & Sciences for students who complete their associate degree, waived UNC application fees, joint advising, financial aid support, and exclusive events at UNC.
But Clay sees C-STEP as more than a transfer program鈥攊t鈥檚 a catalyst for confidence, leadership, and community. Students in C-STEP often step into student government roles, volunteer, and participate in UNC鈥檚 invitation-only events, where they build friendships and picture a future they once believed was out of reach.
鈥淲atching these students grow, connect, and ultimately thrive after transferring is incredibly rewarding,鈥 Clay shared. 鈥淭heir success is a powerful reminder of how transformative access, guidance, and a supportive peer network can be.鈥
Advice Rooted in Support and Realism
In his work with all students鈥攏ot just those in C-STEP鈥擟lay stresses one message: You are not alone. He reminds students that the strongest ones are not the ones who never struggle, but the ones who reach out before the challenges pile up. Asking questions, meeting with instructors, using campus resources, and checking in with advisors early makes all the difference.
A Glimpse Into Clay鈥檚 World
When Clay isn鈥檛 advising students, you might find him relaxing at his favorite spot on campus: the quiet, calming first-floor view in the Bryant Student Union. He also has a fun list of hobbies and interests that showcase the personality behind the professional.
His first job was working as a sports camp counselor at the Durham YMCA. These days, he unwinds with hibachi steak and chicken from Musashi鈥攆ried rice and zucchini included. If he鈥檚 ever roped into karaoke, you might hear him belt out 鈥淎 Little More Time on You鈥 by *NSYNC (and yes, he owns that proudly).
Clay also dreams of learning small engine repair someday鈥攈e finds the idea of fixing and refurbishing engines both practical and deeply satisfying.
A Lasting Impact
Every day, Clay helps students see what they can achieve鈥攚hether that’s transferring to UNC through C-STEP or simply believing in their own abilities. His compassion, humor, and commitment make him an essential guide for students navigating some of the most important decisions of their academic journey.
Clay Bochnovic isn鈥檛 just helping students transfer鈥攈e鈥檚 helping them transform.
