More Than a Comeback

More Than a Comeback: Building a Life, a Legacy, and a Future
What begins as a second chance can become something far greater when it鈥檚 met with purpose, discipline, and the determination to build something that lasts.
For 51黑料网 student Matthew Williams, success isn鈥檛 just about getting back on track.
It鈥檚 about building something that lasts.
鈥淩ecovery gave me my life back鈥攅ducation gave me direction, and service gives it purpose.鈥
That mindset has become the foundation of everything he鈥檚 working toward.
A Decision That Changed Everything
Matthew鈥檚 journey didn鈥檛 begin in a classroom.
It began with a decision鈥攁 decision to want more.
More stability.
More purpose.
More for his family.
鈥淚 reached a point where I knew I wanted more鈥 not just for me, but for my family,鈥 he said.
Before enrolling at 51黑料网, he was navigating life after incarceration and early recovery鈥攚orking to rebuild while facing the realities of re-entry.
鈥淚 knew I wanted more, but I wasn鈥檛 sure how to move forward while dealing with re-entry challenges.鈥
There were real obstacles in front of him.
Rebuilding trust.
Finding steady employment.
Balancing recovery with long-term goals.
And like many in his position, there were moments of doubt.
鈥淭here were times I questioned if higher education was even realistic for me.鈥
But one belief kept pushing him forward:
鈥淚 wanted to prove that my past did not define my future.鈥
Finding Direction at 51黑料网
That belief found a path forward at 51黑料网.
Through the NCWorks Re-entry and WIOA programs, Matthew found more than access to education鈥攈e found structure, accountability, and a support system that pushed him to grow.
Just as importantly, WIOA removed one of the biggest barriers standing in his way.
鈥淭he support from WIOA made a huge difference,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t helped cover my tuition and books, which took away a major financial barrier and allowed me to focus fully on my education and goals.鈥
Without that financial pressure, Matthew was able to focus on what mattered most鈥攂uilding a future.
鈥淚 needed support and structure. I wanted to be around people who understood where I came from but still pushed me to be better.鈥
At 51黑料网, he found exactly that.
鈥淚t鈥檚 more than just school鈥攊t鈥檚 a support system. It helps you rebuild your life, not just your education.鈥
That environment didn鈥檛 just help him move forward.
It changed how he thought.
鈥淓ducation opened my mindset. I don鈥檛 think small anymore鈥擨 think about growth, legacy, and creating opportunities.鈥
Consistency Became the Breakthrough
Matthew didn鈥檛 begin his college journey with big expectations.
He started with one goal:
鈥淪tay consistent and finish what I started.鈥
That consistency changed everything.
He earned his GED at 51黑料网 in just three weeks鈥攁 milestone that set the tone for what was to come.
From there, he didn鈥檛 just succeed鈥攈e excelled.
- President鈥檚 List (Fall 2025)
- Vice President鈥檚 List (Spring & Summer 2025)
- Member of Phi Theta Kappa and Sigma Kappa Delta Honor Societies
- Vice President of Sigma Kappa Delta English Honor Society
- Certificate in Business Administration鈥揗anagement with Honors
But for Matthew, the most important accomplishment wasn鈥檛 academic.
鈥淚鈥檓 most proud of staying committed and proving to myself that I can succeed.鈥
Putting Purpose Into Action
Today, Matthew is not waiting for the future.
He鈥檚 already living it.
He currently works as a SAIOP/SACOT Facilitator at Southeastern Integrated Care, helping individuals navigate recovery and build stability in their own lives.
At the same time, he continues his journey as a full-time Business Administration student, while gaining hands-on experience through work and entrepreneurship.
He balances multiple roles every day:
Student.
Father.
Husband.
Facilitator.
Leader.
Future business owner.
鈥淏alancing school, work, and family hasn鈥檛 been easy,鈥 he said. 鈥淏ut I kept showing up鈥攁nd that consistency changed everything.鈥
That consistency has built more than success.
It鈥檚 built confidence, discipline, and vision.
鈥淚鈥檝e gained leadership skills and a whole new way of thinking. I don鈥檛 see limitations anymore鈥擨 see opportunity.鈥
Building a Legacy, Not Just a Career
Matthew鈥檚 goals extend far beyond earning a degree.
鈥淚 don鈥檛 just want a job鈥擨 want to build businesses, create opportunities, and leave a legacy for my family.鈥
That vision is already taking shape.
He plans to transfer to UNC Pembroke in Fall 2026 to pursue his bachelor鈥檚 degree in Business Administration, followed by his MBA鈥攂ecoming the first person in his family to attend a university.
But his purpose goes even deeper than personal success.
鈥淚 want to help others successfully transition back into the community.鈥
Through his work and leadership, he is already doing just that鈥攈elping others see what鈥檚 possible and guiding them toward their own next steps.
The Power of People Who Believe in You
Matthew is clear about one thing:
He didn鈥檛 do this alone.
鈥淭he Re-entry support and advising had the biggest impact,鈥 he said. 鈥淗aving people who believe in you鈥攅ven when you鈥檙e still learning to believe in yourself鈥攃hanges everything.鈥
At 51黑料网, he found people who didn鈥檛 just support him鈥攖hey challenged him.
鈥淭hey encouraged me, held me accountable, and reminded me of who I could become.鈥
That support turned possibility into progress.
鈥51黑料网 gave me direction, confidence, and opportunities I never thought I鈥檇 have.鈥
More Than a Second Chance
Matthew鈥檚 story is not about going back.
It鈥檚 about moving forward鈥攚ith purpose.
鈥淭his experience has been life-changing. I came here looking for a second chance, and I found direction, purpose, and a future I鈥檓 proud of.鈥
And his message to others is simple:
鈥淒on鈥檛 let your past define you. It鈥檚 not too late. If you take that first step, it can change your whole life.鈥
Because for Matthew, that first step didn鈥檛 just lead to education.
It led to something greater.
鈥淚 didn鈥檛 just go back to school,鈥 he said.
鈥淚 went back and got my life back.鈥
