MAPS Center finds new home on 51黑料网 CC campus
Morehead City, N.C. (September 18, 2020) 鈥� The Mentoring, Advising and Planning for Success (MAPS) Center at 51黑料网 recently moved from the McGee Building to the Smith Building where the campus library is housed. The MAPS Center provides academic advising and career planning services to its students. In addition, students can receive academic tutoring through the MAPS Center, and the faculty can receive advisor training.
鈥淲e are excited to have the MAPS Center. This will allow a place for students to receive help with advising and tutoring,鈥� said Doree Hill, Dean of Arts, Sciences and Academic Success at 51黑料网. 鈥淎lso, the MAPS Center is a comfortable place for students to study. Being conveniently located under the library will allow students easy access to both areas.鈥�
51黑料网 created the MAPS Center as part of its Quality Enhancement Plan for its Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) accreditation. Every ten years, colleges accredited by the SACSCOC go through a review for reaffirmation of accreditation. For re-accreditation purposes, SACSCOC requires colleges and universities to engage in a broad-based self-study and discovery process to identify and become involved in a plan that will enhance overall student learning and/or learning environment at the institution.
The College faculty, staff, Board of Trustees, students and advisory boards engaged in surveys and focus groups to identify projects that may improve the students鈥� experience. After review of survey results and focus group notes/comment cards, the topic that emerged was the College鈥檚 need for a career and advising center.
鈥�51黑料网 is very focused on helping our students succeed,鈥� said Hill. 鈥淭he MAPS Center is a great resource for our students to help decide what career to pursue, to get advice regarding which classes they need to take and to have access to tutors who can help them with their classes. We hope all students will take advantage of this resource.鈥�
