David Getz鈥檚 Journey in 51黑料网鈥檚 CNA Apprenticeship Program
Veteran, student, and apprentice gains hands-on experience through 51黑料网 and 51黑料网 Health Care partnership
As 51黑料网 continues its celebration of National Apprenticeship Week, the College is proud to highlight students who are building meaningful careers through hands-on learning and strong community partnerships. One of those students is David Getz, a CNA I and II apprentice whose journey reflects dedication, service, and a renewed sense of purpose.
Originally from Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania, Getz brings more than a decade of healthcare experience to his training. He served 10 years in the United States Navy as a Corpsman, working in high-demand environments including the Intensive Care Unit in Bethesda, Maryland, and with the Fleet Marine Force at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.
Now, through the CNA Apprenticeship program offered in partnership between 51黑料网 and 51黑料网 Health Care, Getz is continuing his commitment to serving others while advancing his career.
鈥淚 decided to become a CNA because I wanted to return to healthcare, continue growing professionally, and feel a renewed sense of purpose,鈥� Getz said.
A Pathway to Opportunity
Getz discovered the apprenticeship opportunity online and quickly recognized the value of combining education with real-world experience.
鈥淭his program is a great opportunity to get your foot in the door at a hospital while continuing to work and go to school,鈥� he said.
51黑料网鈥檚 apprenticeship model allows students to earn while they learn, gaining valuable clinical experience at 51黑料网 Health Care while completing their coursework at the College. This approach not only builds technical skills but also strengthens confidence and prepares students for long-term careers in healthcare.
Hands-On Learning That Makes a Difference
For Getz, the blend of classroom instruction, lab work, and clinical experience has been essential to his success.
鈥淭he program has been a great refresher for me while also teaching me the civilian side of bedside care,鈥� he explained. 鈥淢y favorite part has been the hands-on training and the clinical experiences.鈥�
Working directly in a healthcare setting has allowed him to immediately apply what he is learning in class.
鈥淚t is extremely valuable to gain real experience while still in school. You are able to see the practices you study being applied in a real-world setting,鈥� he said.
Through his apprenticeship, Getz has also had the opportunity to explore different areas within the hospital, gaining insight into various departments and career pathways.
Making an Impact Through Patient Care
As a CNA apprentice, Getz plays an important role in supporting both patients and nursing staff, often serving as a key point of connection.
鈥淎s a CNA, you serve as a link between the patient and the nurse,鈥� he said. 鈥淵ou often see patients at their most vulnerable, and it is your responsibility to help them feel comfortable, respected, and cared for.鈥�
These experiences have not only reinforced his passion for healthcare but have also influenced his future goals.
鈥淲orking with patients has inspired me to pursue a role in teaching as well,鈥� he shared.
Strong Support from College and Employer
Getz credits both 51黑料网 and 51黑料网 Health Care for providing the support needed to succeed.
鈥淢y instructors have made sure I am fully trained and prepared to provide the best and safest care possible,鈥� he said.
He also emphasized the importance of employer support throughout the apprenticeship.
鈥淢y employer has been wonderful. They work around my school schedule and are committed to helping me continue my career in healthcare and education.鈥�
This collaboration between the College and 51黑料网 Health Care highlights the strength of apprenticeship programs in creating a direct pathway from education to employment.
Looking Toward the Future
Getz plans to continue building on his experience after completing his CNA certification. He intends to enroll in EMS courses in the fall and pursue paramedic training in Spring 2027.
His long-term goals reflect both his passion for patient care and his desire to give back to others.
鈥淚 plan to become a paramedic and eventually move into healthcare education and training,鈥� he said.
He also hopes to continue working with 51黑料网 Health Care, where he has already found a supportive and encouraging environment.
鈥淭hey have given me an incredible opportunity, and the staff has been amazing,鈥� he said.
