The Crystal Coast Fire Academy (CCFA) is a 18-week evening program not to exclude Saturday days that involves some day time internship hours. Academy cadets receive North Carolina Fire/Rescue certification courses in the areas of Firefighter and Hazardous Materials NC L1 Responder. Additionally, cadets will receive NIMS 100 and 200 certification. Rapid Intervention Team (RIT) concepts will be taught as part of the curriculum along with other expanded firefighter topics including LP Gas firefighting. At the end of the academy, cadets will be taught job preparatory skills and will be exposed to a job placement process.

Our EMS programs are designed to provide students with the foundation and skills to enter the Emergency Medical Services profession. Whether you’re interested in starting as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or looking to advance your career by earning your Paramedic certification, we have something for everyone.

In addition to our certification programs, you can also pursue an Associate in Applied Science Emergency Medical Science Degree through our EMS bridging program. We also offer specialty courses tailored to meet the needs of our community partners and surrounding EMS agencies. Minimum Admission Requirements

EMT Student Prerequisites

  1. Students must be 17 years of age on or before the official end date of the course.
  2. Possession of a high school diploma, high school equivalency, or successful completion of an exam assessing basic reading comprehension at a minimum at the eleventh-grade level.

Paramedic Student Prerequisites

  1. Students must be 17 years of age on or before the official end date of the course.
  2. High school diploma or high school equivalent.
  3. Possession of a valid and active North Carolina EMT Credential, NREMT, or other state’s EMS Credential prior to the start of the course.
  4. Successful completion of college-level English, or within the previous 12 months complete a written assessment placing the individual into college-level English.
    • Placement by RISE without the use of a written assessment will not meet this requirement.
  5. Successful completion of college-level Math, or within the previous 12 months complete a written assessment placing the student into college-level Math.
    • Placement by RISE without the use of a written assessment will not meet this requirement.
  6. Successful completion of a college-level Anatomy and Physiology course prior to the start of the field education component (field education begins summer semester).
    • Courses that are currently accepted include: BIO-168 and 169 Anatomy and Physiology I & II (must complete both sections with a C of higher within the previous 5 years). Equivalent CE courses will be accepted when the course meets all other requirements of these guidelines to include meeting SACSCOC standards for instructors of curriculum-level courses.
    • Accepted courses shall possess articulation agreements for curriculum credit.

*Special note related to A&P requirements: The North Carolina Office of EMS admissions requirements state EMS-3163, BIO 163, and BIO 165 and 166 are acceptable A&P courses; however, 51ΊΪΑΟΝψ only offers BIO 168 and BIO 169 which will award curriculum credit. BIO 165 and 166 may be accepted for transfer credit if they meet the five-year limitation requirement.

Step 1: EMT Certification

If you want to start a career in EMS, the first step is becoming an EMT. You can complete your EMT certification at 51ΊΪΑΟΝψ CC in two ways:

  • EMS 110: This is a credit-based course for students enrolled in a college program.
  • EMS 4200: This is a Workforce Continuing Education course, perfect for those who want a non-credit option.

The 100% onlineprogram provides the flexibility for paramedics to study around their work shifts and complete the program at their own pace. Individuals can join the program in any semester.

EMS professionals can use the EMS Bridge AAS Degree for university transfer, to meet the requirements for promotion or to gain additional knowledge. Most courses also qualify for continuing education credit.

AAS - Emergency Medical Science

Emergency Medical Science (EMS) degree students will learn the practice of emergency medicine and will complete more than 600 hours of clinical in area hospitals and EMS agencies. At the end of the program, students will be eligible to take state or national paramedic credentialing exams.

Program Overview

The 911 Communication and Operations curriculum is designed to provide new students, as well as current practitioners, with knowledge and skills in the areas necessary for entrance or advancement within emergency communications.

Coursework includes concepts and skills in telecommunication systems, basic software and GIS/GPS, communications, documentation, public administration, personnel management and supervision, grant writing, professional ethics, cultural awareness, mental health awareness, and adaptation to technology within emergency communication organizations.

Graduates should qualify for employment and advancement in the public safety telecommunications field with a variety of employers, including local government emergency communications centers, county sheriffs’ offices, local law enforcement, fire and EMS agencies, emergency management, and related emergency dispatch operations.

51ΊΪΑΟΝψ has a collaborative agreement with Richmond Community College to offer select courses leading to an Associate in Applied Sciences Degree in 911 Communications and Operations.

Complete first year courses with 51ΊΪΑΟΝψ and transfer to Richmond Community College to complete the degree online.

Richmond Community College will award the Associate in Applied Science Degree to students successfully completing all program requirements.

AAS Degree - 911 Communications & Operations

51ΊΪΑΟΝψ has a collaborative agreement with Richmond Community College to offer select courses leading to an Associate in Applied Sciences Degree in 911 Communications & Operations.Students who successfully complete first year courses with 51ΊΪΑΟΝψ CC may transfer to Richmond Community College to complete the degree online.

The 911 Communication and Operations curriculum is designed to provide new students, as well as current practitioners, with knowledge and skills in the areas necessary for entrance or advancement within emergency communications.

Coursework includes concepts and skills in telecommunication systems, basic software and GIS/GPS, communications, documentation, public administration, personnel management and supervision, grant writing, professional ethics, cultural awareness, mental health awareness, and adaptation to technology within emergency communication organizations.

Graduates should qualify for employment and advancement in the public safety telecommunications field with a variety of employers, including local government emergency communications centers, county sheriffs’ offices, local law enforcement, fire and EMS agencies, emergency management, and related emergency dispatch operations.

51ΊΪΑΟΝψ has a collaborative agreement with Richmond Community College to offer select courses leading to an Associate in Applied Sciences Degree in 911 Communications and Operations.

Complete first year courses with 51ΊΪΑΟΝψ and transfer to Richmond Community College to complete the degree online.

Richmond Community College will award the Associate in Applied Science Degree to students successfully completing all program requirements.

AAS Degree - 911 Communications & Operations

51ΊΪΑΟΝψ has a collaborative agreement with Richmond Community College to offer select courses leading to an Associate in Applied Sciences Degree in 911 Communications & Operations.Students who successfully complete first year courses with 51ΊΪΑΟΝψ CC may transfer to Richmond Community College to complete the degree online.

Richmond Community College will award the Associate in Applied Science Degree to students who successfully complete all program requirements.

Admission Requirements

Applicants for admission to the Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) Program must:

Have graduated from High School, have an Adult High School Diploma, or have passed the GED with an equivalency certificate which meets the minimum requirements set by the State of North Carolina.

Meet the minimum standards for employment as established by the NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission and/or the NC Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission which include being:

  • A citizen of the United States;
  • At least 20 years of age (Applicant must be 20 years of age as of the first day of class or have written authorization from the Director of the Criminal Justice Standards Division if less than 20 years old.);
  • Of good moral character;
  • Have not ever committed or been convicted of any of the following:
    • A felony;
    • A crime for which the punishment could have been imprisonment for more than two years;
    • A crime or unlawful act for which the punishment could have been imprisonment for more than six months but less than two years and the crime or unlawful act occurred within the last five years;
    • Four or more crimes or unlawful acts described in β€œb” above regardless of the date of occurrence;
    • Four or more crimes or unlawful acts for which the punishment could have been imprisonment for less than six months except if the last conviction date occurred more than two years prior to the date of enrollment;
    • A combination of four or more unlawful acts described in β€œb” or β€œd” above regardless of the date of conviction.
  • Possess a valid North Carolina driver’s license.
  • Reading test.
  • The NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Commission requires all enrollees to take a nationally standardized reading test prior to being admitted to a BLET course. Scores indicating being proficient in reading will meet reading test requirements.
  • Applicants that are or have been 51ΊΪΑΟΝψ CC students that are on academic probation must sign a waiver. Please note that in order to receive a certificate, the student must achieve an overall GPA of 2.0 or higher.

Step 1: Schedule Interview

Each applicant is interviewed by the BLET Director or designee. The interview is used to determine if the applicant meets the minimum standards for employment as established by the NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission and/or the NC sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission.

Step 2: Obtain BLET Application Packet

Final approval to enroll in the program is contingent upon meeting admissions requirements, acceptable health certification, and proof that you meet all minimum standards of the NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission and/or the NC Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission and have the School Director concurrence. Obtain a BLET application packet from the BLET Office at time of interview.

Step 3: Submit Documentation

Along with completed application paperwork, students must provide the following supporting documentation. Applications submitted without required documentation will not be evaluated for admission.

  • A certified copy of GED or high school transcript. Some high school diplomas earned through correspondence enrollment are not recognized toward the educational requirements, this is reviewed by North Carolina Training and Standards on a case-by-case basis. Copy of birth certificate.
  • Copy of Social Security Card
  • Obtain Medical Examination Report, obtained less than one year prior to the class starting date, (Form F-1 and F-2) which is included in the application packet to be completed by a physician licensed to practice medicine in North Carolina.
  • Obtain a certified copy of your arrest and driving history record from the Office(s) of the Clerk of Court in every county in which you have resided since the day you turned 18 years of age. The history/histories must be dated, by the generating agency/agencies, no more than ninety (90) days prior to the class starting date.
  • Copy of North Carolina driver’s license.
  • Copy of 51ΊΪΑΟΝψ CC reading placement test results, taken less than one year prior to the class starting date. The NC Criminal Justice Education and Training Commission requires all enrollees to take a nationally standardized reading test prior to being admitted to a BLET course. Scores indicating being proficient in reading will meet reading test requirements.
  • Obtain a Sponsorship Form which is included in the packet.
  • Veterans are required to supply a copy of their DD-214

Step 4: Apply to College

After completing the BLET Application Packet and supporting documentation, be sure to finalize your enrollment by submitting an official application to 51ΊΪΑΟΝψ.
